Here are my suggested movies, books and games that will help inspire you when you want to dive into fantasy. These are my suggestions, so you may or may not agree, and I may have left a few out. Please feel free to add.

All of these inspire me and get my creative juices flowing. I love these movies, books and games not just for the awesomeness, but to transport me into a world beyond our own. A world of fantasy filled with magic, mystery, and wonder. OOOOHHH, I love saying that!

• 13th Warrior – an underrated movie. Watch it for the costumes, cast, visuals, the story, the adventure, Antonio Banderas, the Northmen washing their face and spitting in the same water (eewww), but you will enjoy it. It’s where the REAL Thor exists. You will know him when you see him.
• Conan the Barbarian – Obviously you watch it to learn what is best in life; To crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women!
• Conan the Destroyer – More humorous than the original but still has good costumes, scenes and a good fantasy feel.
• Thundarr the Barbarian – An old cartoon you should look up or catch the reruns of. Because ‘Lord’s of Light’ it’s a world of savagery, super science, and sorcery.
• The Lord of the Rings. YES, all three… The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and Return of the King. And NOT the ones that came out in theaters, I’m talking about the ones with the extended scenes, special edition, in the pretty boxed set that comes complete with your very own Helm’s Deep souvenir. And you should watch them back to back.
• The Princess Bride – Just watch it. It’s one of my favorite movies. Absolutely. Adventure, fantasy, romance, swashbuckling scenes, scenes, costumes, and did I mention the great dialogues.
• Bedknobs and Broomsticks – My favorite movie. This movie spirited me away every time I watched it. Make sure you sing along.
• Chronicles of Narnia – It shows you how they work children into fantasy and put a spin on religion in fantasy and make it good.
• Bram Stoker’s Dracula – It’s a good movie. And Gary Oldman was vicious.
• Dragonheart – The visuals were great and I love Dragons. A humorous movie. It teaches how you can incorporate honor and a strong set of morals into your character, and even though they may stray from the path, it is never unmarked.
• Harry Potter Series – Another great way to have children in a world of fantasy as the main focus and the adults as support.
• Willow – Very good movie. Great characters, good world-building examples, excellent costumes, and scenery. Compared to now-a-days, the graphic are not really that great, but back then it was… WOW.
• Van Helsing – Great costumes. Another underrated movie.
• Pirates of the Caribbean – An adventure. All around great movie.
• Krull – Yes, I said it! It has good scenery, costumes, and the Black Fortress is cool. You know you want a Glaive.
• Dragonslayer – Look it up. It’s good and worth it.

• Drangonlance Novels – Something for everyone who wants to break into fantasy.
• Any fantasy role-playing game. You don’t have to play, just read the manual, codex or encyclopedia.
• Conan comics and graphic novels: The Savage Sword of Conan, Conan the Savage, Conan the Barbarian, Savage Tales, King Conan, Conan the King, Conan the Adventurer, Conan the Cimmerian. You get the point. (Yes, I collected them.)
• Princess Bride – Yes, I know I already mentioned the movie, but there was a book.
• The Witches – by Roald Dahl. They made a movie from this book.
• Red Sonja comics and graphic novels – She is Conan’s near equal.
• Anne Bishop – She has written some good books and her worlds are a darker alternate version of ours.

• Oblivion – This game is just Awesome! One of the best.
• Dragon Age – Another Awesome game.
• Baulder’s Gate – All of them.
• Neverwinter Nights – All of them…actually anything BioWare.
• World of Warcraft – they did a great job world-building and have good stories throughout the game.
• Assassin’s Creed – Well, it’s an assassin. Killing is his business, and business is good.
• Thief – Great game. Great world-building, plot, characters, the works. I am patiently waiting for THI4F….patiently…. patiently…. patiently…. patiently….HURRY UP, EIDOS Montreal.
• Civilization – Any of them, all of them.
• Stronghold – Any of them, all of them.

I hope this helps anyone interested in getting inspiration or trying to beat writers block.
I have not begun to dig into my vault of goodies, I just gave you what I keep on my top shelf of goodies. Enjoy.
